STRATEGIC PLANNING

HISTORIC PRESERVATION

What is the Fort Wayne Historic Preservation Commission?

The Fort Wayne Historic Preservation Commission is a seven-member body appointed by the Mayor and established to preserve and protect historically or architecturally worthy buildings, structures, sites, and districts which serve as visible reminders of the historic heritage of the city.  This purpose is advanced by enforcing those provisions found in the Fort Wayne Historic Preservation and Protection Ordinance (Chapter 151 of City Code).

The Commission has jurisdiction over all buildings, sites, structures, and districts designated as local historic districts and reviews proposed exterior changes to those properties to ensure that the character-defining historic features remain intact.  The HPC also reviews nominations for local historic designation as well as National Register nominations.

Commission members must be residents of the city and are drawn from a variety of backgrounds as specified by the Ordinance and Certified Local Government regulations.   The HPC is staffed by two preservation planners who also serve as staff to the Community Development Division.  The HPC staff assists in administering the ordinance, while offering a wide range of technical assistance to help property owners maintain or recapture the historic integrity of their property.
