PUBLIC NOTICE: 2023 EPA BROWNFIELDS CLEANUP GRANT PUBLIC MEETING
Public Comment on Proposed Brownfield Cleanup Grant at
Former OmniSource South Property, 1610 N. Calhoun St. Fort Wayne, Indiana
The Fort Wayne Redevelopment Authority intends to apply for a $2,000,000 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) Cleanup Grant to conduct remediation of environmentally impacted soil at the Former OmniSource South Property, 1610 N Clinton Street, Fort Wayne, Indiana (Site).
This notice is to publish and seek comment from all interested parties on the following U.S. EPA-required documents related to grant-funded remediation activities at the Site:
- Draft Single-Site Cleanup Grant Application – outlines the site history, community need, proposed redevelopment plan, and the proposed cleanup plan for the Site based on historical assessment activities, which determined that the soil beneath the Site has been impacted with hazardous substances.
- Draft Analysis of Brownfield Cleanup Alternatives (ABCA) – outlines cleanup and environmental management alternatives and the recommended remediation for the Site based on historical Phase II ESA activities completed at the Site.
Copies of the above-referenced documents and correspondence are part of the administrative record of the Site and are placed in the public repository that is available at Citizens Square, Suite 320, Fort Wayne, Indiana. A public meeting has been scheduled for October 30, 2023 from 2 pm to 3 pm at Science Central, 1950 N Clinton Street, to discuss this project.

CEDIT Brownfield Grants (Brownfield Assessment Grant and Brownfield Remediation Grant)
The CEDIT Brownfield Grants include both assessments (environmental testing) and remediation (clean-up of contamination). Grants for assessments reimburse eighty percent (80%) of all costs for any environmental assessments, not to exceed a total of twenty thousand dollars ($20,000). Such assessments include, but are not limited to, Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, Further Site Investigations (FSIs), and Asbestos Surveys.
Remediation grants reimburse one-hundred percent (100%) of all costs for remediation work, not to exceed a total of thirty thousand dollars ($30,000). The total amount of City brownfield grant funds that may be allocated to a particular project shall not exceed a total of fifty thousand dollars ($50,000).
Applications are accepted year-around. Approval is dependent upon program funding and the criteria in the grant regulations. Links to grant documents are below.
2019-2022 EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant
On October 1, 2019 the City recieved an EPA Assessment Grant for city-wide assesssments. Assessments will be prioritized by City planning efforts created through public input.
