The Public Works Division is responsible for planning, designing and maintaining Fort Wayne's streets, sidewalks and street lights. The Solid Waste Department, which manages the City's garbage and recycling collection, and the City's Fleet Management Department also are within the Public Works Division.

Board of Public Works Office
The Public Works Director and staff administer and support the various Public Works divisions, manage neighborhood improvement petitions, accept parade and public assembly permits.

City Engineer
The City Engineer's Office coordinates the transportation project development and includes the Flood Control Coordinator, who manages flood protection for the City.

Transportation Engineering
This department provides civil engineering functions which support the design and construction of street, curb, sidewalk and other transportation-system improvement projects.

Right-of-Way Department
This department includes the Right-of-Way Permit Office, where barricade and other construction-related permits are obtained for using or building in City-owned right-of-way property. The City's cable television franchise and cable TV franchise fees are also administered in this department.

Traffic Engineering
Designing traffic flow improvements and maintaining traffic-related infrastructure are part of this department's duties. The City's "Traffic Calming" program is also administered here. This department's Sign Shop paints the lines on the streets and installs signage such as stop and yield signs. The Signal Shop installs and maintains the City's traffic signals and pedestrian lights.

Street Light Engineering
This department designs and maintains the City's street lighting system.

Banner Displaying
This area provides information on requirements and procedures for displaying banners on City street light poles.

Street Department
The Street Department provides street and alley maintenance, picks-up leaves and plows snow.

Solid Waste Management
This department administers the City's three solid waste-related contracts for garbage, recycling and yard waste pick-up. It also promotes recycling and other important environmental issues.

Fleet Management
This department administers the contract for the maintenance of most of the City's fleet of vehicles and equipment. The Fleet Superintendent also helps develop policies for the use of city vehicles and helps departments develop vehicle replacement programs.

City TV Fund
The primary purpose of the cable fund is to enhance public, educational, and government access television within the City of Fort Wayne, through the effective use of cable television franchise fee receipts.
