STREET SWEEPING Print E-mail

The Street Department is responsible for keeping the streets clean and swept. The City is divided into five (5) sections for sweeping. During daytime hours (7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.) we have four (4) quadrants with each quadrant having a street sweeper assigned to it. Streets are swept by a pre-determined route. Unless there are unusual circumstances or debris in a street that poses a safety hazard, the sweeper operators do not jump around sweeping streets on an individual request basis. Jumping around would cause needless delays in regular sweeping and could contribute to streets being missed. Streets are swept four (4) times each year. In addition we have a street sweeper following each leaf crew during leaf season (weather permitting).

The department also has a sweeper and operator assigned to third shift (10:30 p.m. - 7:00 a.m.) to sweep the downtown area, elevations throughout the city, and very main arterial streets. These streets are very congested during the day time hours so sweeping them at night is more thorough and efficient. The downtown area and elevations are swept on a weekly basis. The main arterials are swept on a rotation basis as time permits.

In order to do a better job, we do at times post no parking signs in neighborhoods having a lot of on street parking. While this usually helps, we have found that neighborhoods that have a pro-active approach to getting cars off the streets when we are sweeping their area is even more effective. If a neighborhood wants to work with the Street Department on scheduling an area and assisting in the process, we are more than willing to work with you. (These requests should be made by neighborhood presidents or representative only.) If you are interested in doing this, please call our dispatch office at 427-1235.

As a rule alleys are only swept on a request basis. We do not sweep them as part of our regular routes.
