What is GIS?
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is an organized collection of computer hardware, software, geographic data, and personnel designed to efficiently capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze, and display all forms of geographically referenced information. GIS is used by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide in government, education, and business.

City Utilities/Public Works GIS
Fort Wayne City Utilities Geographic Information System department was formed in January 1991. It currently employs seven full-time staff members and one part time staff member.

Our mission is to provide valuable products and services in the form of maps, reports, analytical data, and advice in support of utility administration, engineering, maintenance, and customer service; and to provide administrative, technical, and troubleshooting services to other City GIS users; and to provide services to the current Administration, and when requested to other Civil City departments and to the public.

Our GIS Department is the nucleus of the City's GIS network, managing and administrating the City's utility data, software, and utility map printing. We make use of street and utility data for both mapping and report writing.  For example, we can map water main break locations, street light locations, water mains and street segment maps. Additionally, we perform routine and specialized maps, reports, and analytical projects for City Utility and Public Works departments.

Benefits of GISThe City of Fort Wayne benefits from our data management and mapping technology when planning and coordinating utility and infrastructure improvement projects and repairs. We provide maps and reports that help the City to improve its productivity and efficiency when maintaining the City's roads and utility network. Additionally, our products and services aid the City's decision and policy-making processes that seek to improve the livelihood of the citizens of Fort Wayne.

City Utilities/Public Works GIS also maintains digital base maps of every section in Allen County, which are often used for land use and zoning maps by Fort Wayne Planning and Zoning.
