Ou
r volunteers end their day knowing that their time was well spent helping homeless animals. No matter what task they carry out, their work is critical to helping animals. Regardless of whether volunteers answer questions from visitors and direct people through the pet center, tidy up the holding areas for our animals, or put their organizational skills to our clerical work, they helped animals in the Adoption Program attain loving, forever homes.

And that's not all. Volunteers, and their family pets, benefit from the knowledge and experience volunteers gain through Group Training; the monthly Brown Bag Dinners; The PAW-ticulars, our newsletter; as well as, the staff, customers, and each other. It's fun spending time with others who share a passion for animals! Friends volunteer together, and new friendships have been started.

VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. After completing an application and interview, volunteers attend a Group Training. Because of the amount of training involved for a successful experience, volunteers should be willing to commit to an hour a week for a minimum of one year.

Following is a list of the positions available, along with a brief summary. The hours that volunteers fill that position are given. Volunteers share the hours. Some positions are limited, due to the nature of the tasks needed. Please check with the Volunteer Coordinator for specific days and times that are open.

Welcomer -
Greet guests coming into the Adoption Center.  Welcomers
answer questions and assist staff with adoption applications. The Adoption  Center is open from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. Mondays, Tuesday, Thursdays and Fridays. On Wednesdays, the Adoption Center is open from 12 noon until 7:00 p.m. Volunteers who have given a minimum of 20 hours may choose to take additional training to become Adoption Counselors.

Animal Care Assistant -
Assist with the care and feeding of animals in the Adoption Center. Yes, we're talking poop here! Because this position requires lots of stooping, scooping and lifting, it is suggested that the volunteer be able to lift 40 pounds. This work is done between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon Monday through Friday. Volunteers should plan on a minimum of two hours. Volunteers should also plan on getting wet, dirty, and receiving plenty of dog licks and kitty rubs.

Lost and Found Assistant -
Help match up lost pets with owners. This is the most difficult, yet the most rewarding opportunity for volunteer service. Volunteers go through reports and the newspaper looking for matches. They also escort customers through the wards. The Animal Receiving lobby is open from 11:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesday, Thursdays and Fridays. On Wednesdays, it is open from 12 noon until 7:00 p.m..

Surgical Assistant -
Assist the vet with spay/neuter surgeries. Surgeries are done Monday, Tuesday and Friday mornings. Volunteers are required to have experience in the medical field or in veterinary science as they will assist with drawing blood, making packs, sterilizing equipment, etc.

Dog Wash: Monday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. volunteers wash dogs that are available for adoption. For many dogs, it is their first experience with soap and water!
