Curdes Avenue Sewer Separation Project Print E-mail

Project Description
The City of Fort Wayne is kicking off its first-ever complete sewer separation project.  It will be the first of several that will be completed over the next several years. Complete separation is the only way these projects can achieve their goal of protecting residents against basement flooding and illicit sewage discharges into the river, as directed by the 1996 Sewer Task Force and Clean Water Act.  This project is a complete new undertaking by the City that will require substantial policy changes in order to implement the complete separation of stormwater from the sanitary wastewater flows.

The Curdes Avenue project is the first in this series and will separate the stormwater and wastewater flows along Curdes, Kenwood, and Charlotte Avenues and Stadium Drive. The current project boundaries are somewhat fluid but are based on City sewage flow basin mapping. These areas may be subject to some minor changes as the project shifts from policy resolution process to the design process, which is not expected to begin until fall.

What is the Curdes Avenue Project Task Force?
This task force is composed of City staff and representative residents who are participating in the policy development and modification required to resolve the referenced issues.  These residents were chosen from a pool of applicants from within and outside the project area.  Applicants were solicited from the March 29, 2006 neighborhood meeting. The participants on the Task Force are listed on the back page.

The Curdes Avenue Project Task Force is to be your representative in the policy development process.  Please take advantage of their participation by contacting them with your questions, concerns, and input.  We hope you will recognize many of the names on this Task Force as your neighbors and homeowner association leaders.

To date, the Task Force has met twice.  Our first introductory and educational session was on May 8th and our second session was on May 22nd.  Our next meetings will be June 15th and 29th.  Although the Task Force is your official representation, anyone is welcome to attend our meetings.

Resident Surveys
At the March 29th neighborhood meeting and via direct mailing, a resident survey was sent to everyone within the project area.  These questionnaires are vital to our policy development process and will also be used once the project moves into the design phase.  To date, only 65 of the 355 surveys have been returned.  If you have not returned your survey, please take a moment to fill out the form and return it as indicated.

These surveys will help the Task Force identify existing conditions in the neighborhood and ultimately develop better policy for the fulfillment of the project.  The information collected from these surveys will be used for this project only and will not be used for any other purpose.  Your participation is greatly appreciated.
