OVERVIEW
The City of Fort Wayne has recognized significant historic resources since 1965, however, concern over the loss of structures and districts representing the city's historic heritage led to the passage of the Fort Wayne Historic Preservation and Protection Ordinance in 1984. The increasing number of properties offered protection under this ordinance led to the formation of the Historic Preservation section of the Fort Wayne Planning Department. Acting on behalf of those property owners who have requested local historic district designation, the preservation planners assist the Historic Preservation Review Board in administering the ordinance, while offering a wide range of technical assistance to help property owners maintain or recapture the historic integrity of their properties.
The Historic Preservation Planning office is also responsible for the Historic Facade Challenge Grant program that, since 1983, has offered funds to owners of historically significant commercial properties as an incentive to restore the original character of the exterior of their buildings. Additional responsibilities include reviewing nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, ensuring compliance of various City programs with federal preservation guidelines, and the updating of the Cultural Resources Survey, a comprehensive inventory of significant and potentially significant historic resources within the city limits.
The expertise of the Historic Preservation staff is available to assist property owners in such items as the re-creation of missing architectural features, reviewing or suggesting sympathetic renovation plans, creating historically appropriate paint schemes, providing historical information, and completing National Register nominations. This has resulted in the utilization of the office as a regional, as well as a citywide, resource for owners of historic properties.
