Job Description:

SUMMARY

Working under general supervision as assigned by the Supervisor, incumbent operates dump truck, hauls equipment, backfills excavations and maintains assigned equipment. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with City and department policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Drives truck to and from work or dumping site to load, unload and move materials;
  • Assists in digging, repairing and backfilling excavations, roadway, sidewalks and curbs;
  • Performs general maintenance on assigned equipment;
  • Checks truck and associated equipment to ensure required materials and tools are available;
  • Performs duties in accordance with the Department's safety rules and regulations including daily check of tires, airbrakes, flood lights and warning signals;
  • Successful performance of the duties of Laborer II for one year or other equivalent experience;
  • Performs assigned duties which requires bending, twisting, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, exerts effort regularly for sustained periods, strain may be intense for frequent or moderate duration;
  • Works under adverse conditions including extremes of temperature, humidity, precipitation and dust.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists in the training of other employees when needed;
  • Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Education equivalent to a high school graduation with advanced training relevant to duties required in this position;
  • Knowledge of the mechanical characteristics and capabilities of the truck and ability to operate it safely and efficiently and performs duties in accordance with the Department safety rules and regulations;
  • Successful performance of the duties of Laborer II for one year or other equivalent experience;
  • Ability to read, write, spell and follow instructions;
  • Ability to understand work processes and use of equipment and machinery.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Indiana Commercial Driver's License Class A. Incumbent must be 21 years of age or older to hold a CDL with the City of Fort Wayne.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Physical effort is exerted regularly for sustained periods and strain may be intense for frequent or moderate duration. The work involves moderate lifting pushing, and bending. The assigned duties requires bending, twisting, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid

conditions, moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, and vibration. The noise level in

the work environment is usually moderate. The incumbent must have the ability to work under

adverse conditions including extremes of temperature, humidity, precipitation and dust. Exposure to dust and extreme temperature or severe outdoor weather conditions occur.
