Memorial Park Plan
Overview
In 2003, the City of Fort Wayne Housing Strategy was adopted as an amendment to the City’s Comprehensive Plan. Following the recommendations of the Fort Wayne Housing Strategy, the Division of Community Development is focusing on planning at the neighborhood level. Eleven planning areas within the city’s core have been identified for potential neighborhood plans. The Memorial Park Neighborhood was one of these areas. It initially was combined with the East Central Neighborhood. It was later decided that each neighborhood would have its own separate plan. In January of 2006, and continuing throughout 2006, the Memorial Park Neighborhood and City Planning staff worked together to develop goals, policies and action steps, culminating in the development of a neighborhood plan which was adopted by the Fort Wayne Common Council on June 2, 2008 as an amendment to the City's Comprehensive Plan.
The planning area for the Memorial Park Plan totals 557.5 acres and is located in the east-central sector of the City of Fort Wayne. According to the 2000 census, 1,174 people and 468 households live within its boundaries. It has seen a significant loss of population and housing stock which presents both challenges and opportunities to neighborhood leaders for revitalization. Manufacturing and educational, health and social services are the main employment sectors for Memorial Park residents. The Anthony Boulevard corridor provides great opportunity for commercial development. Numerous economic development programs exist to encourage business growth and job creation.
