City Plants First Rain Garden

As part of the implementation of a variety of green initiatives, the City of Fort Wayne has planted its first rain garden.  Rain gardens are landscaped areas that receive stormwater runoff from rooftops or parking lots during rain storms then allow the water to slowly soak into the ground once the storm has passed.

Mayor Tom Henry was joined by volunteers and City employees in planting over 100 rain garden plants at the City's first demonstration rain garden site at 515 E. Wallace Street.  Over the next few years, Fort Wayne will design and plant 19 more rain gardens at public sites such as schools, parks and universities.

Aqua Neighborhoods Transition to City Water

Approximately half of the area in the north end of Fort Wayne served by Aqua Indiana has now been transitioned to Fort Wayne City water.  Conversion of the eastern one-third of Phase VI as shown on the attached map of transition areas will be converted to City water on Monday, May 5.  The remaining area in Phase VI will be converted on or shortly after Thursday, May 8.

Phase VI includes about 6,000 customers and will complete the entire transition of the Aqua north area to Fort Wayne water.

As part of the transition, City Utilities prepared information about City water including information about the City's use of chloramines to prevent the regrowth of bacteria in City water lines.  Information about the health effects of chloramines may be found in the brochure entitled:  Questions and Answers About the Use of Chloramines for Drinking Water Disinfection.  Other information about City water quality can be found in this FAQ on Water Quality Issues.
