Overview

In 2003 the City of Fort Wayne Housing Strategy was adopted as an amendment to the City's Comprehensive Plan. Following the recommendations of the Fort Wayne Housing Strategy, the Division of Community Development is focusing on planning at the neighborhood level.  Eleven planning areas within the city's core have been identified for potential neighborhood plans.  The Northside Neighborhood was one of these areas. In September of 2005, and continuing throughout 2006, the Northside Neighborhood and City Planning staff worked together to goals, policies and action steps, culminating in the develop of a neighborhood plan.

The Northside Neighborhood is one of the largest neighborhoods in the City, covering 861 acres, and is located just northeast of Fort Wayne' s downtown central business district.  The area is home to approximately 8,800 residents (2000 Census) with a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds as well as businesses providing a diverse array of neighborhood and regional services.  The Northside Neighborhood is rich in history with the potential for several designated historic districts.

In February, 2007, the Northside Neighborhood Association adopted the plan.  On March, 2007, the Fort Wayne Plan Commission voted to recommend that City Council adopt the plan. In April, 2007, the Fort Wayne Common Council adopted the goals and policies of the Northside Neighborhood Plan as an amendment to the City's Comprehensive Plan.
