*Green Tip of the Month
This month’s Green Tip is a survey to find out how green you are. National Geographic recently completed a study on how our personal choices add up and affect us on a global perspective. You can adopt certain behaviors that will help the environment a more sustainable place. Take the quiz, and let me know what you get. The higher the score the better, 60 is the top score.

*Energy Efficient Buildings Executive Order for Indiana
Governor Mitch Daniels issued Executive Order 08-14 in late June to establish energy efficiency in state buildings. It states that all new state buildings, including all state agencies, departments, offices, boards, commissions, and public universities, have to be designed, constructed, operated, and maintained to achieve maximum energy efficiency including consideration for life cycle costing of the building. The term “efficiency” can be demonstrated by building either silver rating for LEED, two globes rating for Green Globes, or Energy Star rated by the EPA. This Executive Order also states that repair or renovation of all existing state buildings must be designed to achieve maximum energy efficiency. This is a great advancement by the state.

*New Location for CFL Recycling
The Home Depot on Lima Road has now begun accepting burned-out Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs) for recycling. Customers can simply bring in any expired, unbroken CFLs, and give them to the store associate behind the returns desk. Connolly’s Do It Best Corp. in Fort Wayne also recycles CFLs at their three locations on Dupont, Maplecrest, and S. Calhoun.
Switching from traditional incandescent light bulbs to CFLs is an easy change consumers can make to reduce energy use at home. According to the EPA, if every American switched out one incandescent bulb to a CFL, it would prevent more than $600 million in annual energy costs and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions from 800,000 cars.
