The National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management activities that exceed the minimum NFIP requirements.

As a result, flood insurance premium rates are discounted to reflect the reduced flood risk resulting from the community actions meeting the three goals of the CRS:

  1. Reduce flood losses;
  2. Facilitate accurate insurance rating; and
  3. Promote the awareness of flood insurance

Under the Community Rating System Program, there is an incentive for communities to take more steps in flood control than just regulating construction of buildings to minimum national standards.  The program works to protect public health and safety along with reducing flood losses.

Did you know that nearly 25% of flood insurance claims come from low to moderate risk areas?  Every home is at risk of some form of flooding which can result from anything from heavy rain to melting snow.  Flood insurance is the best way to protect yourself from devastating financial loss.

As a result of Fort Wayne’s participation in the Community Rating System, citizens are saving an average of 10% a year on flood insurance premiums.
