The Great American Cleanup is the country’s largest beautification and community improvement project. It provides a high-profile platform for activities that meet specific local needs, including litter & river cleanups, litter prevention education, graffiti removal, beautification and community improvement projects.
Each year, on the third Saturday in May, the City of Fort Wayne takes part in this national program. Volunteers of all ages focus on cleaning up litter and debris from the City’s parks, roadways, trails and riverbanks. The City provides groups with garbage bags, gloves and t-shirts. Sign up for the 2012 event will begin in April. Interested participants can sign up by contacting the Solid Waste Department at 427-1345; or return to this webpage in April to sign up on-line.
4627 volunteers contributed 13,881 hours to cleaning up our City in this one day event! This is what they accomplished!
185,240 pounds of litter & debris was collected 42 miles of roads, streets & highways were cleaned or beautified
1,300 acres of parks & public lands were cleaned
15 miles of hiking, biking & nature trails cleaned
3 acres of wetlands cleaned & improved
Most unusual items found: an artificial limb, a white, artificial Christmas tree, a love letter, animal skeletons & bingo balls. One group wrote in that they found self respect; and another group found a trapped abandoned puppy that they rescued.
THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR VOLUNTEERS, WE COULDN'T DO IT WITHOUT YOU!
