Pedestrian Connectivity Needs Map
Mayor Tom Henry, with guidance from the Plan-it Allen! Comprehensive Plan, is committed to making Fort Wayne a better place to walk by creating a transportation network that accommodates bicyclists, pedestrians, vehicles and transit users.
Mayor Henry recognizes that many Fort Wayne citizens find it more convenient to get in a car and drive a short distance, than to simply walk a few blocks. He envisions that, with a well connected pedestrian network, people may choose to walk more because it is the most convenient option. To help realize this vision, the Mayor has directed Planning staff to develop a 10-year plan that will work toward filling gaps in our sidewalk network along the City’s major roadways and will also present goals and policies to provide direction to decision makers.
The community has provided and continues to provide direction to city staff in the drafting of the plan. In the summer and fall of 2009 the City received nearly 2,500
surveys, which among other things, indicated which destinations are the highest priorities for pedestrians to walk to, and which intersections are in most need of improved pedestrian safety. Staff members also went to each of the area neighborhood partnership meetings and presented the goals and vision for the plan and received feedback. Finally, a 17 member Advisory Team, consisting of both public and private members, was formed to review and assist the Planning Team with the creation of the plan.
With the implementation of the plan, the community will be allowed and encouraged to experience the
benefits of walking . Fort Wayne’s transportation system will become more balanced, and more choices will be available to its citizens. Mayor Henry envisions a day when residents perceive walking as a practical, reasonable and healthy transportation option. He invites you to be part of making Fort Wayne a more walkable community.
The Walk Fort Wayne Plan focuses on two major areas to encourage the development and use of pedestrian facilities.
• Creating Goals, Policies and Action Steps to guide decision-making
• Developing a Prioritization Connectivity Map to guide implementation.

PLEASE NOTE: The Walk Fort Wayne Plan will primarily address major roadways that currently do not have existing sidewalk or trail along them. Issues regarding maintenance of existing sidewalks can primarily be addressed with the petition process through Barrett Law.
