Fort Wayne is fortunate to have a growing and thriving trails system. Did you know that the Fort Wayne Area Trails Network consists of nearly 129 miles of trails, with 97.4 miles inside City limits? Most of the trails in City limits are planned, designed, constructed and maintained by the City of Fort Wayne.

Sometimes people get a little confused about the role Fort Wayne Trails has in the trails as compared to the role the City of Fort Wayne has. Fort Wayne Trails, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The mission of Fort Wayne Trails is to be a community partner and advocate in the development of a connected, multipurpose system of trails in Allen County, Indiana. Fort Wayne Trails has definitely been a great community partner to the City of Fort Wayne!

The old saying goes “time flies when you’re having fun.”

These famous words couldn’t ring more true when discussing the summer of 2022 in Fort Wayne.

Not too long ago, residents were making plans to spend their summer days enjoying downtown festivals, music events, and farmers markets. It seems with a blink of an eye, summertime is coming to an abrupt end.

Before saying goodbye to summer, there is another downtown event has quickly become a can’t-miss activity every year. And that’s Open Streets Fort Wayne.

Patience and hard work are paying off as we'll soon have a new city garbage and recycling hauler. City Council and the Board of Public Works have given unanimous approval for GFL Environmental USA to be Fort Wayne's next provider of solid waste collection services effective July 1.

We've been through a lot of ups and downs with Red River since 2018, but as I said a few months ago, we're making it right for you and better days are ahead. We're looking forward to GFL being our new partner as we work each day to provide the best solid waste collection services possible for the 83,400 households we serve.

Did you know that May is Historic Preservation Month? If not, now you do!

Every year in May, governments, historians, and community organizations join forces to celebrate local historic places and heritages. Preservation Month began as "National Preservation Week" in 1973 and in 2005, the National Trust for Historic Preservation extended the celebration to the entire month of May and declared it Preservation Month.

In Fort Wayne, we are fortunate to celebrate our history at every corner of the city, from important landmarks and homes to established districts and neighborhoods.
