What is the coronavirus?

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a new strain that was discovered in 2019 and has not been previously identified in humans. Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death.

What should you do to protect yourself from the coronavirus?

Masks add another layer of protection to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Cloth face covers and masks help PREVENT YOU FROM PASSING CORONAVIRUS TO OTHERS. If you're going to a supermarket, pharmacy, or other life-sustaining business, it's important to protect yourself and others by covering your face.

According to the CDC, some people have COVID-19 with no symptoms, so wearing a face cover or mask helps you avoid unknowingly spreading the virus. Wearing a face cover or mask reminds you—DON’T TOUCH YOUR NOSE AND MOUTH.

You may develop a FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY when wearing a face cover or mask, causing you to do riskier things, such as going into crowded spaces rather than avoiding them. When removing your face covering, be careful to wash your hands right away so you don’t TRANSFER CONTAMINATION to your hands, and then to your face or the surfaces you touch afterward.

  • WASH YOUR CLOTH FACE COVER after every use. Easy Method: Drop your face cover into a large Ziploc bag, fill it with hot water, add a drop of hand or dish soap, and zip it closed. Holding it over the sink, gently squeeze it to create a “washing machine” effect. Pour out the soapy water and add clean hot water to rinse. Repeat the rinse 3 times. Squeeze out the face covering and blot it with paper towels. Hang up the face cover to air dry.

If you think you have been exposed to COVID‑19 and develop a fever and symptoms, such as cough or difficulty breathing, call your healthcare provider for medical advice.
