Job Description:

SUMMARY

Working under the direction of the Field Operations Manager and overall direction from the Executive Director, the incumbent performs duties required to provide continued sewer services, uses hand, power tools and equipment. The incumbent is expected to use good judgement, independence, initiative and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. At all times, the incumbent conducts him/herself in a professional manner with supervisors, peers, subordinates and customers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

  • Operates equipment including trucks, riding mowers, various other lawn care power equipment bed mounted crane;
  • Forms, mixes, pours and finishes concrete and mortar:
  • Uses hand and power tools regularly;
  • Remains on-call for emergencies;
  • Ensures proper care and maintenance of departmental equipment, tools and work areas;
  • Accurately troubleshoots lift stations, grinder pump stations with a variety of tools to determine cause of failures;
  • Understands basic electronics;
  • Works with some independence from supervisory control and has the authority to deviate from instructions, if necessary, while keeping Field Operations Manager advised of deviations at all times;
  • Uses judgment and makes decisions that will effect the quality and adequacy of work;
  • Assists in handling customer complaints;
  • Ensure duties are performed in accordance with applicable safety rules and operating regulations and procedures, established work rules, carries out policies established by superiors and/or Federal, State or local government;
  • Competency in the safe use and disposal of a variety of chemicals;
  • Performs utility locates as required;
  • Performs “tap” inspections as required;
  • Assists in directing training for District personnel which would include skills, safety policies and departmental policies and procedures;
  • Reports irregularities and abnormal conditions as it relates to the Districts collection system;  
  • Consistently meets deadlines and keeps Field Operations Manager up-to-date on the progress of their request.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Education equivalent to a high school diploma with advanced training in relevant to duties required in this position;
  • At least three years of successfully performing entry level duties or equivalent duties;
  • Experience in sewer construction, gravity collection systems a plus;
  • Knowledge of how a low pressure collection system operates;
  • Ability to understand work processes, methods, and use of equipment and machinery;
  • Ability to use Windows based software;
  • Ability to successfully complete a confined space entry class.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES

  •  If deemed necessary, must have the ability to qualify medically and physically to wear respiratory protection equipment;
  • Ability to read and use air monitoring devices;
  • Ability to send and receive e-mails
  • Ability to maintain effective work relationships with supervisor(s), peers, subordinates, District staff and the general public;
  • Ability to pass post-offer screen for this position.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Incumbent has regular contact with co-workers and some contact with the general public. Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions along with procedure manuals. The employee must be able to write routine reports and correspondence. The incumbent must have the ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization. Incumbent performs work under moderate supervision with instructions being relatively complete. Incumbent recommends or requests deviations from general instructions when necessary.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry our instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. The employee must be able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid Indiana Drivers License;
  • Must take a 10-hour OSHA training course in General Industry (1910) and Construction (1926) within 1-year of obtaining position
  • Full training of OSHA guidelines and policies as it pertains to confined space entries must be obtained within 3-months of hire;
  • Must obtain certification in adult CPR/First Aid within 1-year of obtaining position and must keep certification current;
  • Must receive annual Hazardous Material training

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 100 pounds or greater. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, sewage, adverse weather conditions including extreme temperatures, humidity, precipitation and dust.
