Job Description:

SUMMARY

Working under the direction of the Manager – Aquatics, Athletics, and Community Events, incumbent manages golf course programs and events.  The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Develops and maintains quality customer service, positive relationships, and gathers feedback with the general public, groups, leagues, and events;
  • Communicates all events, programs, leagues, and other activities in a timely manner with golf course operations staff as well as other relevant Parks and Recreation employees;
  • Maintains up to date operations and staff manuals for each golf course;
  • Supervises all Golf Shop staff, and oversees the daily staff schedule;
  • Works closely with Golf Superintendent to ensure quality course conditions, evaluate condition of golf facilities and equipment, ensures necessary maintenance operations are performed as needed, and plans long term replacement/investment decisions;
  • Supervises and manages daily reports including money deposits for accuracy, and investigates to resolve any discrepancies;
  • Selects, coordinates, and procures supplies, equipment, and services required for proper golf course operations;
  • Prepares all monthly reports and records; Prepares reports as needed including but not limited to financial, sales, attendance, etc.;
  • Teaches as needed and promotes the facilities and games of golf at facility and in community;
  • Develops and maintains a high quality golf instructional program;
  • Recruits, trains and monitors instructional staff;
  • Develops and schedules all events at facilities;
  • Oversees food and beverage concession and Pro Shop operations; which includes purchasing, sales, inventory management, pricing, minimizing loss due to waste; theft and resolving any discrepancies in a timely manner;
  • Meets with supervisor, Golf Superintendent, and Assistant Pro/Managers on regular basis;
  • Develops and maintains a team oriented culture in the golf operations which include regular staff feedback, training, staff development, and clear and consistent communications;
  • Resolves complaints and concerns from staff and patrons in a timely, clear and concise manner consistent with Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation and City policies;
  • Works with the marketing department to design and implement marketing materials, advertising items, sales initiatives; and to develop strategies for an comprehensive quarterly and annual marketing plan;
  • Promotes golf related programs and activities during the off-season to attract additional outings, leagues, and individual play for the upcoming season, i.e; speaking to groups, neighborhood associations, outing organizers, etc.;
  • Provides clear communications to leagues, outings and special events on pricing, included amenities, terms, and benefits by utilizing Parks and Recreation golf facilities;
  • Demonstrates proficiency, troubleshoots, and trains others on departmental POS/registration software;
  • Assists in the annual planning process for golf operations and makes recommendations for improvement;
  • Reviews fee structures and promotions to remain competitive with area courses;
  • Oversees golf volunteer program that ensures all volunteers are trained in proper procedures, operates in a safe manner and follows relevant Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation and City policies;
  • Assists with Lifetime Sports Academy and Junior Golf Tour; as directed;
  • Works with other Parks & Recreation staff and other City Employees as needed;
  • Must be visible and engaging on golf course with clientele;  
  • Maintains good relationship with members of the local golf community including other golf courses, professional instructions, course managers, media, and businesses (both golf and non-golf).

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The incumbent is responsible to manage their performance in accordance with this job description and the performance expectations provided to them by management. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises 2 full time employees and 20-30 non-supervisory seasonal employees. The 2 full time employees will supervise 20-30 seasonal employees.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or at least four years related experience and/or training;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Software Applications.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES

  • Maintains harmoniously working relationships with golf operations staff;
  • Completes all projects and assigned tasks in a timely manner and by assigned deadlines.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid Indiana Driver's License;
  • PGA Member or Apprentice PGA Member preferred.
