Job Description:

 

SUMMARY

 

Working under the direction of the Transportation Manager & City Engineer, the incumbent assists with engineering design, drafting and surveying for the Transportation/Traffic Engineering Services departments for the City of Fort Wayne.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

  • Assists in scoping for future transportation capital projects.

  • Assists in developing geometric improvements for future transportation capital projects.

  • Assists in developing cost estimates for future transportation capital projects.

  • Performs, evaluates and recommends engineering analyses of traffic activities including traffic flow conditions, accidents, problems and remedial possibilities;

  • Assist with various civil engineering activities related to the planning, designing, construction, reconstruction, utility coordination, inspection and maintenance of various transportation capital projects;

  • Assist in managing various traffic calming devices for neighborhood associations, problems or issues;

  • Assists survey crew with performing various land surveying function;

    MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs other duties as required.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • 2nd or 3rd year college student enrolled in Civil Engineering or related Engineering;

  • Specialized knowledge of engineering principles, procedures, methods and materials relative to transportation/traffic engineering;

  • Communication skills conducive to maintaining effective working relationships with both public and private sector personnel;

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Contacts with coworkers, other department personnel, government officials, developers, contractors and the general public occur throughout the work to receive/provide information, assist in maintaining project cohesiveness while handling inquiries and complaints.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. The incumbent is responsible for managing several interrelated services within the departments and administration which includes coordinating work, managing projects, providing

    ta/reports, and maintaining positive public relations.

  • Valid Indiana Driver's License if City vehicle is used;
