May 23, 2019 - The Public Works Division is pleased to learn that the City’s fleet operation is one of the best in North America, as honored by Fleet Magazine’s selection of the 100 best Fleets in the Americas. Not only did Fort Wayne make the Top 100 but Fort Wayne placed 5th in the award list presented by100Best Fleets.com.
The program recognizes peak-performing fleet operations in the Americas for performance improvement and innovation within the public fleet industry. Thirty-eight thousand municipal fleets are eligible to enter the awards program.
Fort Wayne’s fleet department maintains 2,207 vehicles, an essential part of providing services to the community. These work vehicles such as police cars, snow-plow trucks, street sweepers, fire command trucks, water maintenance trucks, backhoes, and many others, assist with essential services and must be dependable and ready to go when they are needed to support the large volume of work that goes on throughout the City.
From routine oil changes to engine diagnostics and repair, the Fleet Department handled 19,200 work orders in 2018 for the City’s vehicles that log more than 10-million miles each year.
Judges evaluate the100 Best Fleets in 12 areas, including: Accountability, Use of Technology and Information, Collaboration, Creativity, Celebration, Evidence of a High Trust Culture, Performance Recognition, Doing It Right the First Time, Quick Efficient Turnaround, Competitive Pricing, Staff Development, and Resources Stewardship.
The list of award winners will be in the June edition of Government Fleet Magazine.
The City of Indianapolis is the only other Indiana City to make the Top 100, placing 41st.
