November 12, 2024 - GFL is working with the City of Fort Wayne’s Solid Waste Department to implement a rerouting schedule that will result in a change of garbage and/or recycling collection days for approximately 25% of customers. The new routes will begin on December 2, 2024.
Over the past several weeks, GFL and the Solid Waste Department have met with the four area neighborhood partnerships and had discussions with the City Council members whose districts will be impacted the most due to the changes in collection days. The meetings resulted in positive dialogue and feedback and gave GFL and the Solid Waste Department comfort in moving ahead with the new routes.
City residents may look up their garbage and recycling days at https://garbagerecyclelookup.cityoffortwayne.org to determine if their collection day(s) will change. Residents impacted by the change will also receive information in the mail from GFL.
In the summer of 2022, GFL offered to step in quickly and begin collection services using the routes already in place. Over the last two years of providing excellent service to Fort Wayne residents, they’ve gathered the information needed to identify ways to make routes more efficient.
- Drivers will have a consistent route with the changes, which will help them increase their efficiency.
- GFL will incorporate more automated trucks, which are safer for employees than the rear-loading trucks being used for curb collections. This will allow them to move rear-loading trucks from curb routes to alley routes. This safety measure will help GFL retain and recruit staff as well as reduce injuries.
- Since the new routes will save time, the result will be fewer trucks on the road, which means less wear and tear on City streets, safer roads for the public, and a lower carbon footprint due to the trucks using less fuel.
- There will also be less wear and tear on the trucks, which will keep them in service longer, reducing possible service disruptions.
- These changes will position GFL for continued efficiency in the future as the City continues to grow.
GFL and the Solid Waste Department value and appreciate working with residents and look forward to providing even better services moving forward. GFL and the Solid Waste Department also want to thank the public for their understanding for the need to change routes.
