March 5, 2025 - Mayor Sharon Tucker today testified on Senate Bill 1 at today’s House Ways and Means Committee meeting in Indianapolis.

Mayor Tucker thanked the members of the committee for their time and attention to a complex matter facing state and local governments to address property tax concerns from constituents.

Mayor Tucker discussed the importance of striking a balance on implementing targeted property tax relief while ensuring that local governments aren’t harmed with financial hardships that could impact providing necessary services to residents, neighborhoods, and businesses.

The City of Fort Wayne has been a good steward of taxpayer dollars to meet the needs of the community and doesn’t want proposed legislation to have a negative effect on cities like Fort Wayne and many other municipalities across the state.

Through public-private partnerships, federal and state grants, and local income tax and wheel tax revenues, Fort Wayne has been able to reduce the local tax rate and debt while utilizing financial resources that have been provided by the Indiana General Assembly.

Mayor Tucker expressed her desire to work with legislators to help ensure Fort Wayne and Indiana have the financial tools to grow and succeed.
