CITY OFFERS NEUTER FOR A NICKEL PROGRAM FOR MALE CATS
FORT WAYNE, Ind, - Animal Care & Control is offering for the forth year, Neuter for a Nickel as part of the 17th annual Spay Day USA celebrated by humane organizations nationwide during the month of February.
Neuter for a Nickel offers Allen County residents the opportunity to schedule male cat neuter surgeries for up to seven male cats per household for just five cents per cat. The event will be held at Animal Care & Control, 3020 Hillegas Road on February 12 & 13 with surgeries provided by contributing veterinarians. Allen County residents must call 427-1244 (option 7) for an appointment prior to the event. Neuter surgeries will be provided for cats ages eight weeks and older on a first come bases.
The event is made possible through an all volunteer effort and with private donations to help the shelter prevent as many unwanted spring litters as possible. Last year Animal Care & Control handled 7,811 cats and kittens, while only 160 of them were ever claimed by their owners; 790 were adopted.
The shelter urges cat owners to spay or neuter their cats at the earliest possible age.
“Uncontrolled cat breeding accounts for the majority of animals surrendered to our shelter. The problem can be solved easily by spaying and neutering pets,” stated spokesperson Peggy A. Bender.
The shelter expects to neuter 600 male cats during the two day event. Only male cats will be served by the program to account for the high volume. To schedule an appointment or to make a donation, call 427-1244.
