What is GIS?
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is an organized collection of computer hardware, software, geographic data, and personnel designed to efficiently capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze, and display all forms of geographically referenced information and create maps. GIS is used by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide in government, education, and business. The City maintains a City GIS Interactive Map to help locate resources, analyze scenarios and/or plan for projects."
City Utilities/Public Works GIS
Fort Wayne City Utilities Geographic Information System department was formed in January 1991. It currently employs seven full-time staff members and one part time staff member.
The City's mission is to provide valuable products and services in the form of maps, reports, analytical data, and advice in support of utility administration, engineering, maintenance, and customer service; and to provide administrative, technical, and troubleshooting services to other City GIS users; and to provide services to the current Administration, and when requested to other Civil City departments and to the public.
The City's GIS Department is the nucleus of the GIS network, managing and administrating the City's utility data, software, and utility map printing. You can make use of street and utility data for both mapping and report writing. For example, you can map water main break locations, street light locations, water mains and street segment maps. Additionally, you can perform routine and specialized maps, reports, and analytical projects for City Utility and Public Works departments.

Additionally, the products and services aid the City's decision and policy-making processes that seek to improve the livelihood of the citizens of Fort Wayne.
GIS also maintains digital base maps of every section in Allen County, which are often used for land use and zoning by Fort Wayne's Community Development Division.
