Until further notice garbage and recycling crews will only collect City of Fort Wayne Issued carts used for residential collection. This is due to the COVID- 19 pandemic. Crews will not pick-up additional personal containers, bags or boxes. During this time, bulk items are limited to one item per week per household. The bulk item should be placed at the curb on the day of your normal garbage collection. It will be picked-up within a few days of your normal collection. Matresses and box springs must be bagged/wrapped for bulk collection.
The award-winning Solid Waste Department oversees residential garbage and recycling collection, sorting, and disposal. Between weekly garbage and every other week recycling collection, nearly 120,000 pick-ups occur each week in Fort Wayne neighborhoods
Funding for the Solid Waste Department is through the fees paid ($12 per home) each month for service. The Department is solely supported through these user fees and received no property tax funding. Besides weekly neighborhood collections, the Solid Waste Department organizes numerous activities, including the annual Great American Clean-up, tire, electronics, and hazardous waste disposal days, support of trail and greenway clean-ups and providing roll-off containers to assist with individual neighborhood efforts.
