What is GIS?

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is an organized collection of computer hardware, software, geographic data, and personnel designed to efficiently capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze, and display all forms of geographically referenced information and create maps. GIS is used by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide in government, education, and business. City Utilities maintains an Interactive Map to help locate resources, analyze scenarios and/or plan for projects.

The mission of City Utilities GIS Department is to provide valuable products and services in the form of maps, reports, analytical data, and advice in support of utility administration, engineering, maintenance, and customer support; and to provide administrative, technical, and troubleshooting services to other GIS users and, when requested, to other City departments and to the public.

The GIS staff members constitute the nucleus of the GIS network, managing and administering utility data, software, and utility map printing. You can make use of street and utility data for both mapping and report writing. For example, you can map water main break locations, street light locations, water mains, and street segment maps. Additionally, you can perform routine and specialized maps, reports, and analytical projects for City Utilities departments.
