ABOUT CITY COUNCIL
The Fort Wayne Common Council is comprised of nine elected members, one representative from each of the city's six council districts and three at-large members. The district members represent the constituents living within the boundaries of their jurisdiction, while the at-large members represent the citizens as a whole. City Council members may seek unlimited four-year terms.
As the Legislative Body, the City Council has the responsibility of passing ordinances, resolutions, orders and motions for the City's government. Along with those responsibilities, the council also is in control of the City's property, finances, and appropriation of all money spent on behalf of the taxpayers.
City Council members, as elected officials, are entrusted with the duty to provide the ways and means to ensure the safety and security of citizens of the City of Fort Wayne and work to maintain and/or enhance a high quality of life.
City Council maintains an office which is staffed by the Legislative Affairs Administrator who is responsible for doing research on ordinances and resolutions, communications such as news releases, news conferences, and correspondences. The staff person also produces the weekly television program "Council Call In" seen on City TV cable channel 58, where host council members discuss current issues before City Council and field phone calls from the public. The Legislative Affairs Administrator serves as a contact to citizens and neighborhoods to follow up on concerns and complaints.
