Community Forum to be Held at Parkview Field

Fort Wayne, Ind. - The City of Fort Wayne’s Redevelopment Department will host a community forum to discuss new brownfield grant funding and solicit ideas for potential sites to be developed.  The forum is slated for 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24 at Parkview Field’s Lincoln Financial Event Center.

Brownfield sites are abandoned, idled or under-used industrial and commercial sites where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by the real or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The City of Fort Wayne continues work with private investors to seek strategies to redevelop such properties, as part of an ongoing economic development initiative.  The City is celebrating 15 years of working to recycle brownfield sites.

At the forum, city officials will discuss details about the $400,000 EPA Brownfield Assessment Grants awarded to the City in June 2011.  The EPA selected the City of Fort Wayne as a recipient of two $200,000 Brownfield Assessment Grants; one grant addresses sites potentially impacted by petroleum and the other grant will evaluate sites that may be contaminated by hazardous substances.

The discussion will also include details on:

How the grants can be utilized;
What type of sites will be eligible for grant assistance;
Who to contact if you are interested in redeveloping brownfield areas;
How you can keep up-to-date on brownfield events/project status;
How to suggest sites as potential brownfields.
City staff and the brownfield consultants will be available after the meeting to answer questions.  Community input and questions are encouraged.

To register for this event, go to the city’s brownfield website homepage at www.fwbrownfield.org or call 427-1127 to RSVP.
