Fort Wayne, Ind. – Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry is encouraging local residents to take part in the Fort Wayne Bike Challenge and see if they can pedal more miles than other local riders. The Bike Challenge takes place this month to celebrate National Bike Month.

"Fort Wayne has an outstanding biking community and we want to encourage even more local residents to take advantage of the benefits of cycling," said Mayor Henry. "Getting on a bike promotes good health and also reduces the use of gasoline and pollution."

To take part in the Fort Wayne Bike Challenge, residents should log on to www.nationalbikechallenge.org and enter their zip code.

Local organizers will monitor results and all miles entered for the month of May will count toward the final challenge. The National Bike Challenge runs through September, but the Fort Wayne Challenge will run just for the month of May. There is no cost to join.

The Bike Challenge is just one activity taking place during Bike Month. Another key event is Bike to Work Day on May 17. From 6:30-8 a.m., cyclists are invited to stop by Headwaters Park West before heading into the office. There, they can enjoy free Starbucks coffee, bagels from the Bagel Station and treats from Pembroke Bakery. When the work day is done, cyclists can celebrate at Fort Wayne Outfitters and the Bike Depot from 5-8 p.m. for food and drinks. People will gather north of the St. Marys River near the historic Wells Street Bridge.
