July 29, 2021 - The Fort Wayne Fire Department today announced plans to build a new Fire Station 14 at the southeast corner of East State Boulevard and Reed Road. The new construction would replace the existing Fire Station 14 located at 3400 Reed Rd.

A new fire station would allow for more space for firefighters, help serve a growing area of the community with three schools nearby and provide for better access to areas the City of Fort Wayne serves in partnership with St. Joseph Township. All of the changes will not impact response times that are currently being met by the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

Officials estimate the investment to construct the new fire station would be in the range of $1.3 million. The Fort Wayne Fire Department has funds set aside in its budget for repairs and new construction when facilities need upgrades to enhance services.

A public hearing on the City of Fort Wayne’s plat vacation petition will be held at the Fort Wayne Plan Commission meeting on August 9. The Commission’s vote on the request would happen at its meeting on August 16. Additional approvals from the Board of Public Works and City Council would also be necessary.

Pending approvals, construction could start this fall with an opening in summer 2022.

“This is a necessary step to help ensure that we continue to provide the best public safety services possible,” said Fort Wayne Fire Chief Eric Lahey. “The new fire station will increase our ability to provide the lifesaving service that the City expects from its fire department.”
