Classroom Tours

Thank you for considering a tour of Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control.  We are pleased that you are interested in acquainting your students to the shelter, so that they may learn how this city department works to make Fort Wayne a safer happier community for animals and people.

Visiting Animal Care & Control meets social studies state standard #2 of Civics and Government. Students learn about the "functions" of a city law enforcement agency and about "citizenship" as it applies to owning pets within a community.

We also accommodate students interested in careers in animal welfare and animal health care.  Our education center can accommodate up to 75 students for afternoon tours from noon-2PM.  Additionally, our Humane Education Library has a wide variety of pet care videos available for free loan.

Following your tour, each teacher will receive a grade specific activity pack.  You may want to use sections as a rainy day activity, homeroom activity or follow up mini unit to your visit to the animal shelter.  In whichever way you choose, we thank you for helping to foster humane caring attitudes in your students.

We also provide tours for scout troops working on pet care badges.  > > more
