March 31, 2021 - The Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department celebrated the official ribbon cutting for its AARP-sponsored Outdoor Fitness Park on March 31 at the downtown Community Center, 233 W. Main Street. Mayor Tom Henry and representatives from AARP were on hand to help cut the ribbon on the fitness structure, which is part of a nationwide project sponsored by AARP and fitness equipment manufacturer FitLot.

The shaded fitness park features a variety of exercise equipment designed for all ages and ability levels. Parks and Recreation officials encourage citizens to come downtown to try out the equipment and to participate in the circuit sessions being offered by FitLot-certified coaches. Both drop-in and pre-registered classes will be available, and the park will be open for free exercise throughout the day. 

March 29, 2021 - A partnership that was formed by several local organizations and the City of Fort Wayne in December 2020 is resulting in additional assistance for homeless individuals and families.

Since the launch of an updated winter weather contingency plan, single homeless women in the community have been provided with over one thousand evenings of safe sleep and shelter. In addition, single homeless women are getting connected with resources and other assistance to help them through current challenges, with the intended outcome being self-sufficiency. 

March 18, 2021 - Progress continues for drainage improvements and sidewalk construction along Hessen Cassel Road. Beginning Monday, March 22, 2021, crews will move into the roadway to construct stormwater pipes that will cross the road.

The work will require Hessen Cassel to close to thru traffic between McKinnie Avenue and Paulding Road. A detour will use South Anthony Boulevard. See attached map. 

March 24, 2021 - The City of Fort Wayne’s Office of Housing & Neighborhood Services has contracted with a nationally-recognized consulting firm to evaluate the state of homelessness in the City of Fort Wayne and develop a strategic plan to address it.

Homebase will work with the City’s Office of Housing and Neighborhood Services, community organizations and stakeholders to first do an assessment of Fort Wayne’s current resources and homeless needs. Then the agency will provide a report that outlines recommendations based on national best practices. There will be two public presentations to report the findings. 

March 17, 2021 - Mayor Tom Henry and the City of Fort Wayne’s Public Works Division today announced that nearly $28 million in neighborhood infrastructure improvements will occur throughout the community during the upcoming construction season.

Government and neighborhood leaders gathered near the east-west alley between Washington Boulevard, Wayne Street, Jackson Street, and Union Street in the West Central neighborhood, a location that will see brick alley improvements.

All four quadrants of the City will see enhancements through investments that will include sidewalks, alleys, street lighting, concrete street reconstruction, asphalt resurfacing, chip and seal, trails, and bridges.
